VIWE MKIZWANA

Viwe Siyabonga Mkizwana is an award-winning bass player and jazz composer, arranger, and producer. Holding a Master of Music (Performing Art) degree from the University of Pretoria, Mkizwana has marked his presence with two albums: "African Skies" (2016) and "Tributes" (2019).

Mkizwana's orchestral prowess led to a notable commission – orchestrating for the Metropole Orchestra (Netherlands) at their BBC Proms Concert in the United Kingdom in July 2022. His creative spectrum extends to producing and writing for fellow artists, including McCoy Mrubata.

On the international stage, Mkizwana has graced renowned concert halls in Amsterdam (The Royal Concertgebouw), Germany (Berlin Konzerthaus, Elbphilharmonie), Belgium (BOZAR), and Sweden (King’s Castle) with the MIAGI Orchestra. Collaborating with global musical talents, from Nils Landgren (Sweden) to Gilberto Gil (Brazil), Mkizwana's versatility shines. He has also worked alongside Grammy-nominated John Fresk and Grammy-winning Wouter Kellerman.

In the vibrant South African jazz scene, Mkizwana's collaborations include a lineup of luminaries: Hugh Masekela, McCoy Mrubata, Paul Hanmer, Nduduzo Makhathini, Marcus Wyatt, Thandi Ntuli, Nomfundo Xaluva, Sibongile Khumalo, Andile Yenana, Zoe Modiga, Khaya Mahlangu, and Sidney Mavundla. His influence extends to being chosen as one of the composers for the MIAGI orchestra’s 2024 European tour.

Mkizwana's accolades include two SAMA award nominations and a Mzantsi Jazz Award for Best Song (2020). The year 2023 brought further recognition with two Naledi Awards for the Hlakanyana Theatre Production: Best Musical Director and Best Musical Score.
